8 Adverse Effects of Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that can have adverse effects on your body. It primarily affects the spinal cord and may impact other body parts too.

The condition causes chronic pain in the vertebrae (spinal joints). The joints and ligaments become inflamed causing pain and stiffness.

In Ankylosis Spondylitis, the symptom usually begins in the hips or buttocks and gradually progresses to the upper spine, chest, shoulder, neck, and eyes. In advance cases, inflammation leads to the formation of bones in joints and spine, causing sections in the joint and spine to fuse resulting in the development of hump. It is a systemic disease and in rare cases may affect body organs, like heart and lungs.

Causes of Ankylosis Spondylitis

The causes of ankylosing spondylitis are still not known, however,  research suggests that genes and heredity play a crucial role in the development of this condition. A gene, HLA-B27, is found in about 90 % of Caucasians with Ankylosis but only 8 % of Caucasians without the condition. This suggests that this gene plays a vital role in the development process. Some evidence spot that Ankylosis Spondylitis may be triggered by an infection. Studies believe that there are several bacteria that also may contribute to the development of ankylosing spondylitis.
